The other gripe I have with this app is that for some reason it only displays the author names as Firstname, Lastname in your library. You can even click on an authors name in your library and be taken to a list of other articles they’ve written which you can import right away. You can also see which articles have cited the one you are looking at in your library, and easily import the citing article with just a few clicks. I do like the desktop app because it has a nice interface and a great “suggestions” tab which recommends articles related to what’s in your library. However, the iPad app does sync with the desktop app really well. Using an Apple Pencil is basically useless, there isn’t even an eraser or an undo button (which is hilariously sad). There are so many great things about this reference manager but their iPad app is awful unfortunately. I’ve also been trying out ReadCube Papers. I just need to work out that issue with article importing I mentioned with the desktop app, and then I’m sold. I’m definitely considering paying full price, the iPad app is just so great and is exactly what I’ve been looking for. There are tons of features and many ways to customize and organize your library (including smart groups/folders based on custom search query, for example). It’s desktop interface isn’t super pretty and I’ve had some issues with it not being able to get the metadata for certain articles, but overall it works well. It also has iCloud sync to keep your iPad and desktop libraries up to date (although I’ve only used their Wifi sync as I’m on the demo version). It has hands down the best Apple Pencil support I’ve seen from a reference manager app and does an incredible job of organizing your highlights and annotations for later reviewing. I have been trying the free demo version of Bookends, and it’s pretty good so far. I have used Mendeley for years and recently got an iPad for reading and annotating scientific articles, but like you said the Mendeley app is terrible. I've used Mendeley but their ios app doesn't support the pencil (and Mendeley really went downhill since Elsevier got it), Zotero doesn't have an ios app, and I tried Papership but it's just a mess (duplicates articles, no central forums for asking questions, and no way in-app to clear out your library - I can't even log out because it's perpetually syncing). Related subredditsĪnybody have a recommendation for an academic reference manager for ipad that has pencil support for marking up documents, has a web library (or lets me store my library on google drive), and works fairly well? There are a shocking number of apps but it's hard to tell from their websites or descriptions if they meet my requirements, and I really would like to avoid spending a lot of time making new accounts to try it out then wrestling with them before figuring out if they're any good.I'll pay but a reasonable amount of money (would rather not spend $100 on Endnote) though obviously the less the better.
